This weeks episode is bound to make you feel good. One organization is paving the way and taking it upon themselves to reward random acts of kindness, in hopes of bringing awareness to mental health issues. I got to sit down with Boomer Perrault, found of 1aweek Challenge to talk about what inspired him to not only change his life for the better and incorporate more positivity and kindness but to inspire others to do the same; and get the chance to win a gift on top of that. From suicide prevention to chick flicks, heartbreak to Legally Blonde, this is not a conversation you're going to want to miss.
Key Points:
The organization was inspired from a study of suicide survivors, where a decent percentage said that if a stranger had just smiled at them or said hello to them that day, they don’t think they would have gone through with their attempts
Second inspiration was dealing with a breakup, not as gracefully as anticipated, and doing random acts of kindness seemed to alleviate the pain for a little bit
The idea came in June 2017, by November social media was up and running to get a small following and some sponsors, and in January 2018 the challenge officially started
Most frequent acts are paying for someone’s drive-thru, or Starbucks gift cards
Sponsors range a wide variety of categories: clothing companies, jewelry, books, 1aweek hats
Even if someone is only doing the act to get a gift, at least the act is being done, and if that could potentially save someone’s life - worth it
The more random acts of kindness you do, the more comfortable you get, and the more it becomes second-nature
Sharing ideas of acts of kindness, inspires others to do the same who might not have ever thought of that act, and the reach increases
There are two ways to look at something, you can look at it as someone trying to show off, or look at it as someone spreading awareness and trying to inspire
Go through a Pear Card every morning to start off the day thinking positive
Through this process, became 100% a better version of self
If you want to do something, just do it, start
