I’m so tired of feeling like I’m on display anytime I dress up, or even dress down in a pair of shorts and a tank. I know I’m not the only one this happens to, and it’s time we had a conversation about it. We need to stop putting on the blame on women for “displaying” themselves, and start putting the onus on educating people to respect others’ bodies and right to wear what they feel comfortable and confident in… without being shouted at.

Key Points:

  • I apologize in advance for completely generalizing in this episode

  • I also recognize that women can be pigs and objectify men too, but that’s not what this episode is focusing

  • I feel like giving catcalls negative attention, or ignoring is a no-win situation

  • Sometimes when I’m walking down the street, I feel like I have to make myself seem smaller so others don’t notice

  • I was barked at, yes barked at, by some gas jockies and took to social media to get the organization to educate their employees on sexual harassment better

  • That’s where #ShortsNotShouts was created, for others to spread the word and raise awareness, and share their experiences

  • As I kid, my mom would lose her mind at grown men “checking me out,” which I was completely oblivious to at that age

  • The double-take is a hazard on the road. Stop paying attention to women walking on the street, and pay attention to the road in front of you

  • We need to educate people. Stop putting the blame on women’s wardrobe choice, and put the education on people to respect others’ bodies

  • The absence of a bra strap is not what is going to change this culture. The education TO NOT REACT to the bra strap is what will.

Mentioned in this Episode:

  • Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City

  • Jim Carrey

  • #ShortsNotShouts

  • Nate Pyle: We’ve been taught a woman’s body will cause men to sin. We’re told that if a woman shows too much of her body, men will do stupid things. Let’s be clear: A woman’s body is not dangerous to you. Her body will not cause you harm. It will not make you do stupid things. If you do stupid things, it is because you chose to do stupid things.

Bringing Me the Joy

Carolina has a strong presence that draws people toward her. I have seen staff members turn to her for her life experience, leadership skills and her honesty. The respect and admiration of her peers is a reflection of her strength and accomplishments in the face of adversity. Carolina displays a great sense of integrity, she always follows through when she commits. Her word is her bond.
