How you react when news breaks that another celebrity has taken their life has an effect that you might not have thought about. I’ve been seeing a lot of messages lately calling people out for only caring about about mental health when it’s in the news, or when it affects a celebrity. And honestly, that feels like such a slap in the face to those of us who try to make an effort day-in-and-day-out in raising awareness and starting conversations about mental health, when something of this magnitude isn’t circulating the media.
Key Points:
It’s easy to get wrapped up in advocating for mental health support, when a situation arises causing it to be everywhere
I see people sharing mental health awareness all the time, and yet some people seem to not notice until something like this happens
I understand the frustration. Yes, it’s easier to share happiness or communicate when a lot of other people are. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t those who are trying all the time
When people mock others for only advocating for mental health when it’s in the media, it makes those of us who do all the time question what the point is
Obviously there is a large influx in news feeds when something like this happens, but that’s how the media works
Foreign Aid for example, only in the media when a natural disaster occurs - doesn’t mean it’s not needed all the time
There is clearly still a lot of work that needs to be done with mental health, but the onus is also on us to reach out
When you’re struggling, it’s hard to think logically
Making my bed in the morning gets my body moving, and gives me a sense of accomplishment

Chile Earthquake Magnitude: 8.8
Glenn Close: What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, more unashamed conversation about illnesses that affect not only the individuals, but their families as well.
